How do I use API’s

I use API’s all the time. Currently when I post a picture on Instagram, I have Instagram the App send the photo to my Personal Facebook. It is nice that Instagram has a built in API to common social networks so I can easily pick and choose which ones I want on my personal Facebook. But in the background I also have my posts go to my Business Facebook and Twitter using Facebook’s and Twitters API’s which posting to multiple accounts in Instagram is not built into the App. From there I use Instagram’s API to automatically add my new Instagram Posts to my website. So with one post it fills up all my social media and I can do this with one click of a button. Lastly I also use API’s to integrate online forms with a payment processor, which in turn creates a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, then sends me an email notification and adds the payment to my cloud accounting software. So I don’t have to do anything. I call it, turning your website into a 24/7 employee.

The purpose of an API is very similarly to Software as a Service (SaaS), APIs offer a very significant advantage for software developers who don’t have to spend time building an application from scratch that performs every function needed, such as registration, tracking, e-mailing or billing. Rather, the API can transfer certain duties to a remote application without any user knowledge or intervention. Although the consumer only sees one interface in front of them when entering their information, it’s really the work of several APIs integrated applications working together to complete any actions the consumer makes from a selected website.

Good Examples

Two great examples of how API’s can affect your company’s presence via social media networks is Facebook and Twitter. As you probably already know, Facebook is loaded with informational gems that you can use to your advantage. Just recently, Facebook has collaborated with developers to help upgrade their documentation and coordination capabilities which has already shown a significant increase in bug fixes. With the new upgrades, company’s have the potential to use Facebook to encourage registration, personalization and commenting all in the same place. Regularly posting helpful links, feedback, suggestions and notifications along with your brand are just a few ways you can capitalize on the use of an integrated API.

The primary reason so many applications were initially built around Twitter was due to the simplicity of their API. If you’re interested in turning your consumer’s tweets into conversions, offers a pool of information you can collect, like creating tools that extend the reach of your Twitter campaign to Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+; and also listen to the conversation around your brand and aggregate the data. Plus, you could stimulate your followers’ conversations that tie-in with your current campaign. Regardless of how many social media sites you use, you can filter them to make sure you’re only sharing certain types of media content, such as posts with a video, picture or a link.
